VW Camper Van

My very first motor journey was in 1968, after my ‘6 week old check-up’ with the Community Mid-wife my parents simply packed me away in the back of a VW Bus.

There were no seat-belt laws and my carry-on cot was pressed into a gap right next to the rear mounted engine! Leaving rural Harpenden for North Wales with my parents driving a 1963 Volkswagen Type 2 Bus two-tone green, split-screen Camper Van.

My Dad had borrowed the Camper Van from a friend at work.

They set off, with a scenic adventure ahead of them and options to stop in lay-bys along A and B routes for a cuppa from the two-ringed gas hob stowed in the back of the van.

My mum had upset the family because she had purchased expensive disposable nappies instead of carrying on the tradition of washing out terry nappies!

They had a lot of fun and took the trusty van along a beautiful headland, called The Great Orme, next to the town of Llandudno in North Wales.
